Serial number 14220
This 1956 Strat closely resembles a famous Strat photographed on two classic 1970 albums: “Eric Clapton” (Clapton’s first solo album), and “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs” (Clapton with Derek and the Dominos). Clapton bought the guitar he named “Brownie” while still with Cream in May of 1967, but didn’t begin using it extensively until 1970 with Delaney and Bonnie and Derek and the Dominos. Besides having a similar sunburst pattern, both the Strat pictured, and Brownie have necks initialed by the same Fender employee, XA (full name unknown). Brownie’s reads XA-6-56 while this Strat reads two months later: XA-8-56. The body dates correspond with the neck dates on both guitars.
